Black Tourmaline
Johannes Mathesius (1504 - 1565) first described black tourmaline in 1562. At that time, it was named "schürl," which is attributed to its occurrence in the Saxon Ore Mountains. There is a suspected connection between the geographical term Zschorlau, which is a municipality in Saxony, and the designation of the mineral stone. The modern name "black tourmaline" likely originates from the Sinhalese language. Up until the 16th century, black tourmaline was also known by the names "Schurel," "Schörle," and "Schurl." In the 18th century, the names "shorl" and "shirl" became established. Later, in the 19th century, additional names such as "common schorl," "schörl," "iron tourmaline," and "schorl" were introduced.
Black Tourmaline and Its Formation
Black tourmaline can form through two different processes. The first is the magmatic formation, where the gemstones originate from silicate melts. They crystallize at temperatures ranging from 600 to 1,100 °C. Initially, this involves a residual melt enriched with iron, chromium, magnesium, and titanium. The second process is the metamorphic formation of gemstones. In this case, granite melts come into contact with limestone. Additionally, various elements such as fluorine, fluorite, boron, or the mineral topaz must be present. Temperatures of 450 to 650 °C are required for metamorphic formation.
Black Tourmaline and Its Properties
Black tourmaline has a relatively wide range of colors. It can be anthracite, bluish-black, or deep black. Brown tourmalines have also been discovered. The gemstones are primarily mined today in Brazil and Madagascar. However, deposits are also found in Australia, Pakistan, India, Burma, Nigeria, the USA, Sri Lanka, Italy, and Switzerland. Generally, black tourmaline is opaque and not cleavable. The crystal system is trigonal. The density of the gemstones ranges between 3.15 and 3.26. When purchasing black tourmaline, it is important to beware of imitations. For example, synthetic glass is sometimes sold as black tourmaline. Additionally, it can be confused with the healing stones onyx, jet, and obsidian.
Black Tourmaline as a Healing Stone
Black tourmaline has a significant impact on people. It counteracts numerous negative influences. Black tourmaline not only protects the body but also the soul. It can create a protective barrier against the negative energies of others, such as envy, greed, or anger. The healing stone is even said to be capable of repelling black magic. Additionally, black tourmaline helps to eliminate one's own negativities.
Black tourmaline possesses extensive energetic powers, making it incredibly invigorating and activating. It supports creativity and enhances perception and alertness. For full effect, the healing stone should be worn very close to the body. Black tourmaline can also create a soothing atmosphere in very hectic environments, such as open-plan offices.
The gemstones not only offer energetic benefits but also possess significant healing powers. For example, the healing stone can cleanse the entire nervous system and free it from negative energies. It can also lead to higher levels of consciousness and strengthen concentration during meditation. Black tourmaline has a balancing and harmonizing effect on both physical and auric blockages. It is said that it can channel negative energies out of the body through the feet when used correctly.
Black Tourmaline in Astrology
Black tourmaline has been closely associated with astrology for thousands of years. It is linked to the zodiac signs Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) and Scorpio (October 24 - November 22). Additionally, it can be associated with the planets Neptune and Pluto as a planetary stone. As a birth or month stone, black tourmaline is attributed to October. It is believed to grant those born in October a sharp business sense and a clear vision for new paths and opportunities. Furthermore, these gemstones are said to instill a certain restlessness in individuals born in October.
Uses and Applications of the Gemstone as a Healing Stone
Black tourmaline is rarely used in stone circles, likely due to its deep black color, which is associated with many prejudices. However, when combined with other stones, it could exhibit excellent properties and qualities. On the other hand, this healing stone is often used in combination with rose quartz. In this way, it can help protect the body from electromagnetic smog.
It is also recommended to wear black tourmaline close to the body, as this allows it to fully exert its physical effects. In this context, it is believed to positively influence the hormonal balance, strengthen the immune system, regulate the cardiovascular system, detoxify the body, and reduce inflammation.
A noteworthy use is the preparation of gemstone water. This water strengthens the body and supplies it with new energy while also aiding in the elimination of toxins. To prepare it, an energized black tourmaline should be placed in clear, lukewarm water for two to three hours. During this time, the gemstone can transfer its energy to the water. Afterward, the gemstone should be removed, and the water should be drunk slowly, in small sips.
Charging and Discharging Methods for Black Tourmaline
Like all gemstones, black tourmaline must be regularly charged and discharged. There are several methods for doing this. First, it is important to wash the healing stone under running, lukewarm water at least once a month. Regeneration can be achieved by placing it in a bowl with hematite tumbling stones and crystal quartz. Alternatively, the gemstone can be placed in the morning or evening sunlight. It can also be placed in an amethyst druse.
